The Northern Dimension Partnership in Public Health and Social Well-being (NDPHS) Secretariat in Stockholm, Sweden is looking for a motivated trainee to join the team to gain practical knowledge and professional experience related to the NDPHS activities.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?

The NDPHS Internship Program offers you an opportunity to round out your academic career with a hands-on experience in an international environment. The intent is that you will learn while contributing to the NDPHS work. The internship program allows you to bring innovative ideas, the latest research experience, and new perspectives into the NDPHS work and improve your skills while working in a professional environment. In addition, it is a way to enhance your CV with practical work experience.

The Internship Program usually lasts for 6 months (can be up to 9 months) and is a full-time (40 hours per week) assignment. For the part-time internship minimum of 20 hours of commitment per week is required.

You will mainly work with mental health topics, which is one of the horizontal priority areas of the NDPHS work, as well as assist the NDPHS Secretariat’s team in communications and administration. You will have room for exploration and applying your vision and innovative approach in these areas.

WHO CAN APPLY?

To be eligible for the Internship you must be a recent university graduate. Although completed university studies are considered an advantage, applications from students who are currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or a master’s degree program and maintaining the student status throughout the internship, will be considered.

We are seeking candidates with a background in Public Health and Social Well-being with great interest in behavioral insights, mental health, or health communication. We will also consider applications from candidates with other backgrounds who can demonstrate a strong interest in and understanding of the mentioned topics.

Only the NDPHS member country citizens (Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Sweden) are eligible for this position.

LANGUAGES

The successful candidate is expected to be highly proficient in spoken and written English which is the working language of the NDPHS.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

The internship will take place at the NDPHS Secretariat’s office in Stockholm, Sweden. Partly remote internship can be discussed.

The NDPHS Internship programme offers a monthly scholarship grant of 10,000 SEK for the full-time internship and pays a travel allowance to compensate the expenses incurred at the beginning and at the end of the traineeship from the place of residence.

VISA, HOUSING, AND HEALTH INSURANCE

You are responsible for taking care of formalities with the Swedish authorities regarding your stay in Sweden including visa requirements. You are required to have valid health insurance coverage during your stay in Sweden.

Housing arrangements are also your responsibility. The NDPHS Secretariat can assist you with information on accommodation in Stockholm.

  • your motivation, educational background, professional skills and expertise;
  • states your preferred starting time and length of internship;
  • lists 1-3 references.

Alternatively, instead of the letter, motivation can be presented in a video format (up to 3 minutes). The references and CV can be submitted only in writing.

The deadline for application is 23 April 2023 23:59 CEST.  The email subject line should be written as “INTERN”.

Please note that applications received after the deadline will not be considered. 

Only short-listed candidates will be contacted.

A reserve list of candidates may be drawn up by NDPHS Secretariat following the interviews and used should additional internship opportunities arise. The reserve list will be valid for 12 months after the closure of the selection procedure.

The successful candidate will be selected based on the education, experience, motivation, and best organizational fit in the Secretariat’s team.

Resilience is built, not assumed: sustaining the health and care workforce under pressure
At the EUSBSR Annual Forum 2026 in Tallinn, where resilience was largely discussed in terms of security, defence, and infrastructure, the session organised by the Coordinator for Policy Area Health - NDPHS, focused on a more fundamental issue: the people who keep systems running. The session Caring for those who care for us brought attention to the health and social care workforce, not as a supporting element of resilience, but as its core condition.

NDPHS Chair Country Norway Becomes a Full Member of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region
Following the Council of the European Union’s welcome of Norway’s inclusion in the Strategy on 5 May 2026, the European Commission adopted a Communication formalising the inclusion on 18 May. In November 2025, Norway assumed the NDPHS Chairship, the Partnership especially warmly welcomes the country as a full member of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, further strengthening regional cooperation and shared priorities.

“A healthy enterprise requires healthy workers” highlighted Dr. Anna-Kaisa Ikonen, Minister of Local and Regional Government of Finland, at the 3rd Baltic Sea Business Day in Rostock. Her remarks set the tone for an event focused on finding the critical alignment between economic success and employee wellbeing. Policymakers and business leaders urged a cross-sector shift toward preventive health measures to combat rising sick leave and secure long-term productivity across the region.

Arts for Health and Well-being Network meets in Szczecin, Poland
ArtWell NET is an initiative financially supported by the Swedish Institute that brings together experts from the health and cultural sectors to promote the concept of ‘Arts on Prescription’. The 20–21 April event was organised in a hybrid format and brought together experts and practitioners, creating the conditions for the exchange of experiences and the development of cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region and Ukraine.
